14 March 2010 Eric Rasmusen, erasmuse@indiana.edu This file is now at http://www.rasmusen.org/a/mozilla-rasmusen.txt These are Eric Rasmusen's tips and tricks for Thunderbird and Firefox, the Mozilla applications for email and browser. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IMRPOVEMENTS NEEDED. 1. In VIEW, have an option for small text, to note take up any more space than icons but to be more understandable. 2. Have a way to save a list of all add-ons, so that when you reinstall on a new computer or after a crash, you can at one keystroke install all your addons. HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH VIEWING FIREFOX BROWSER IN LARGE FONT The best way to make the font larger when viewing a webpage in Firefox is to hold down the CTRL button and scroll up using the mouse wheel. This is very useful when showing a web page to a class using a projector. (Source: RF in G492) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX QUICKER RECVOERY FROM DISABLED FIREFOX Disable the Session Restore crash recovery feature which is enabled by default. This will prevent restoring a previous session when Firefox is opened after an unexpected close or software crash. (Otherwise, you get a slow-you-down request for whether to starta new session or not. I ALWAYS want to start a new session.) 1. In the Location bar, type about:config, and press EnterReturn. * The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page. 2. Find browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash in the list 3. Double-click on browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to set it to false. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX DELETING DUPLICATE ROWS (for email) First, export the address book to *.csv comma-separated format. From: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA010346261033.aspx Open the file in Excel. Select all of it. Do DATA then FILTER, then ADVANCED FILTER, then check off UNIQUE RECORDS ONLY. That will show only the unique records. Then COPY what is showing to the clipboard. Go back to DATA then FILTER then ADVANCED FILTER then Do NOT check off UNIQUE RECORDS ONLY. Then the whole file will show. Press the DELETE key to delete all the rows. Then do CTRL-V to paste in the uniquely filtered rows. Then SAVE the file, and all the duplicates will be gone. Then import the *.cxv file back into the email address book. There isn't a way I know of to filter on just duplicates in one column and deleting all rows that have duplicates in that column even if they are different in other columns. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX GOOD THUNDERBIRD EXTENSIONS: Send Later Extension [SL8TR] sl8tr.xpi Display Quota XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX GOOD FIREFOX EXTENSIONS: Duplicate Tab 0.9 Foxmarks Bookmark Synchornizer Tab X 2.0 PDF Download 0.7.9 (less important) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SEND MAIL AT A LATER TIME. This was supposed to be built into Thunderbird 2.0 but wasn't. There is a great plug-in, though, at http://www.unsignedbyte.com/?page_id=4, Send Later Extension [SL8TR] sl8tr.xpi Install it, and then compose a message, and then look in FILE, SEND LATER. I will use this for my weblog. To see what you've got scheduled, go to the server's DRAFTS folder, not the local one. The time given is the time of writing, not the time of sendng. To see the time of sending, go to VIEW and HEADERS and click so you can see ALL the headers for each message, not just the normal ones. The time-of-sending info is in the header. Still, I think Lettermelater is better (http://www.lettermelater.com/account.php, a free website) It does not format your email to put in end-of-line markers. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thunderbird does not do intelligent merges of address books, it seems, or give any easy way to prune addresses. What I have to do is export them to text and then delete. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sharing_address_books XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thunderbird Local Folders Local Folders are put in a bad place. I thought you could see in Thunderbird, Account Settings, Local Folders for the location, but that seems to be wrong. Instead, it is here: mailbox:/D|/My Documents/Thunderbird/Profiles/default/6y4wkvgp.slt/Mail/Local Folders/2006-incoming XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX For my spam filter, look in my webmail account.
