December 11, 2003. צ ק The Ninth Day of Christmas: The Mazdaspeed Protege.

It has long been my custom to send out lists of good things of the year with my Christmas cards. I thought it might be nice to set this out one by one in my weblog. They are not in any particular order. Here is the ninth.

9. We replaced our old 1990 Protege with the 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege, very similar but with an MP3 player, big tires, and a turbocharger to add horsepower to the nimbleness. $20,000 or so. The internet forum is a good place to look for complaints and add-ons.

Other cars that are worth thinking about in the four-door-fun-driving-for-in-town category are the new Mazda sports car (Mazda RX-6, I think, that Instapundit bought), the Subaru WRX 4-wheel-drive station wagon, (I just didn't like the driving feel), and the regular Mazda Protege hatchback. I thought the BMW 3-series and the equivalent Lexus too expensive to compete with these that I have just named.

I imagine there must be other people who are interested in a car that is fun to drive in town. That means it should be small for easy parking, turn corners quickly, shift easily, accelerate well from zero to 40, and brake well from 40 to 0. It needn't go fast or ride smoothly.
