The Origin of the Prisoner’s Dilemma
When I was writing the first edition of Games and Information back in the 1980′s I was confused by the varying citations give for The Prisoner’s Dilemma. I asked Lloyd Shapley about it, since he was there at the founding, and he referred me to Albert Tucker. Professor Tucker replied with this letter telling me about his Stanford handout and the article by Straffin that tells the story, Philip Straffin, “The Prisoner’s Dilemma,” UMAP Journal. 1: 101-103 (1980). I republished both in Readings in Games and Information.
