Abraham and His “Sister” Sarah

One of the odd things in Genesis is that there are two similar stories about how Abraham pretends to be Sarah’s brother instead of her husband, out of fear of a king who admires her beauty. In Genesis 12 [+/-]Open Link in New Window the king is the Pharaoh of Egypt, and in Genesis 20 [+/-]Open Link in New Window it is the king of Gerer. In both stories, Abraham acts despicably. It’s natural to suppose that the compiler of Genesis wrote in two versions of the same story. But I realized, in thinking of how bad Abraham’s behavior was, that this evil provides an alternative reasonable explanation: Abraham saw that the deceit worked, and repeated it. He was afraid of Pharaoh, pretended to be Sarah’s brother, and survived. So, being afraid of the king of Gerer, he did it again, knowing that God would pull his chestnuts out of the fire.

This puts Abraham in an even worse light, but Abraham is just one of the many flawed “good guys” in the Bible. Jacob, David, and Peter are three others. There’s also Genesis 16 [+/-]Open Link in New Window, where Abraham cravenly abandons Hagar when Sarah changes her mind. Abraham, the symbol of Faith and Promise, doesn’t become a hero of faith until chapter 22, with the sacrifice of Isaac.

I think Abraham was “Pimping” hi wife/sister, the guy was truely turning his back on honorable conduct….and as for hearing voices that would ask him to sacrafice his son??? my vote is this was not the true voice of GOD…the Devine would never ask this of someone…this was the voice of an egocentric mania…why it would be the beginning of a faith is beyond any reason…I just don’t get it!

Why Abraham called Sarah his sister, and in the sametime she was a wife for him?

  3. Remone Says:

Abraham and Sarah are half brothers and sisters, they share the same father but different mothers.

In response to Susan’s comment, ” my vote is this was not the true voice of GOD…the Devine would never ask this of someone…this was the voice of an egocentric mania.” The Bible in Gen 22:1-2 [+/-]Open Link in New Window said GOD tempted him in this manner. So the Devine did request this act. As far as Abraham failing Sarah, GOD stepped in and protected Sarah both times from the kings sleeping with her and GOD had her released, even through Abraham failed to protect and love his wife enough to lay his life down for her if need be.

Gen 20:11 [+/-]Open Link in New Window says why he did the act. Not because he was an ego maniac. Maybe because the ‘trick’ worked , but he says that the fear of God was not in that place…therefore it is very possible that someone else may have taken his life…
It is not right…but we understand the reason why…

The beauty of the Bible is the many layers of meaning. I heard another interpretation yesterday when I was struggling with my relationship. That when in exile Abraham and Sarah agreed to travel as sisters to maintain love and connection. Sometimes the fire burns between a man and wife and they are connected. At times it doesn’t. When it doesn’t when we are in disconnected, it is as if in exile. We can learn from Abraham and Sarah who in hard times in their relationship switch their love from that of a wife and husband to that of a sister and brother. A less firey more gentle love and one that allow them both to stay connected.
