I often tell prospective PhD students that success in many PhD programs isn't about being a bright and beautiful flower. It's about being like slime mold, able to persevere and thrive without attention, water, or light.&lt;br /&gt;

Honestly, I think cultivating the ability to go without any praise or positive feedback for months or even years is important. It’s very hard to do this job unless you’ve decided you just like doing the work and don’t care too much what others think.&lt;br /&gt;
