Headlines, March 8, 1999

This website is about media coverage of different scandals. Juanita Broadderick accuses President Clinton of raping her in 1978. Many people say that such accusations should not be reported. Looking back, however, many of the newspapers saying this were very eager to report accusations of less severe misconduct supported by far flimsier evidence, when such reporting helped Bill Clinton.

. Here are the headlines of stories on Sally Hemings and Jefferson:

DNA TIES SLAVE, PREZ TO S.I. CLAN, (Daily News (New York)) ; DNA proves Jefferson's slave child (The Independent (London)) ; RESEARCH SUGGESTS JEFFERSON FATHERED SLAVE GIRL'S CHILD, .The Scotsman, DNA TESTS IMPLICATE ANOTHER PRESIDENT, TWO CENTURIES LATER, IN A SEX SCANDAL, WALL STREET JOURNAL, Modern science confirms old rumor, The Boston Globe, DNA STUDY SHOWS JEFFERSON FATHERED HIS SLAVE'S CHILD Los Angeles Times, DNA Test Finds Evidence Of Jefferson Child by Slave, The New York Times, DNA proves president fathered slave's child, The Ottawa Citizen, JEFFERSON LIKELY SIRED SLAVE'S SON, NEW DNA TESTS SUGGEST, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tests Link Jefferson, Slave's Son; DNA Study Suggests A Monticello Liaison, The Washington Post,

Notice phrases like ``DNA Ties,'' ``DNA Proves'', ``Science Confirms'', ``Tests Link''. There's not a lot of hedging.

Here are headlines of stories on Juanita Broaddrick and Clinton:

Clinton accused of assault, The Detroit News, Clinton's accuser on TV tells of alleged '78 attack, The Houston Chronicle, On Tortuous Route, Sexual Assault Accusation Against Clinton Resurfaces, The New York Times, It's not over . . . USA TODAY, NBC AIRS CLINTON SEX-ASSAULT STORY; NETWORK DENIES PRESSURE FOR A DELAY, WALL STREET JOURNAL, Appetite is slight for a new scandal; Media cool to latest Clinton allegations, The Boston Globe, Woman tells of '78 Clinton assault; Sex attack reported by ex-campaign worker, The Boston Globe, CLINTON CAMP DENIES ALLEGED SEX ASSAULT, Los Angeles Times, A Long-Simmering Story Explodes Into the Mainstream, .The Washington Post, BILL FORCED SEX ON ME, WOMAN SEZ, .Daily News (New York), WOMAN RECANTS DENIAL IN BILL SEX, Daily News (New York), NBC KEEPS LID ON SEXGATE INTERVIEW Daily News (New York),

Past haunts Clinton: U.S. Congress investigating allegation of rape, The Ottawa Citizen, Rape claims add to ominous tide running against Clinton, .Sunday Times (London). Clinton accused of 1978 hotel rape, The Guardian (London), 'Clinton raped me in hotel,' claims Arkansas woman, The Independent (London), Woman in Clinton rape claim tells story, THE DAILY TELEGRAPH(LONDON), DISTURBING CLINTON RAPE ALLEGATIONS REVEALED, The Scotsman, Rape claim returns for Clinton, The Times (London),

Notice phrases like ``Claims'' and ``Accused,'' and the number of headlines which do not mention what Clinton is accused of. I've separated out the foreign headlines. Notice that the foreign press all call the accusation ``rape'' (which it is, of course), while the American press uses softer words like ``assault''. (Only under our current president would the press be accused of being soft when they only use the word ``Assault''!).
